So, quite some time ago... I went to Queen City Bakery with Manzibar. I had been talking to him the night before and mentioned that I had gone to Queen City Bakery that very morning with Sanzibar. We had watched the sunrise and decided to get a some breakfast for her and her family. Gus finally asked what Queen City Bakery was. I was astonished. I thought he had been there... but apparently he's missed a few of San's and my coffee adventures. So we decided we'd go visit on Sunday.
On our way to the most wonderful coffee shop in Sioux Falls, Manzibar said, "So what exactly is this place?"
The answer to this question is something like this:
Well, it's a bakery and a coffee shop. It's downtown, right next to the railroad tracks and just down the street from Our Lady of Guadalupe. The address is actually 8th and Weber. It's owned by a guy and his wife, she bakes, and he makes the coffee. They have few workers besides themselves, and although there are hours listed, they don't necessarily keep to them. There in in and older building, it's made of brick and there's a staircase up to a second a story that only covers half the building, a kind of "loft" I suppose.
They're extremely unpretentious. I think this attracts me to the place more than almost anything else. I say, "I'd like a coffee," and the barista says, "Big or little?" Ahhh! I have to relish this. I find it so silly when I'll ask for a small at say, to give the most generic example, Starbucks and they be like, "Oh, did you mean tall??"
This place uses Burbach's cream in the coffee, which is a big plus for me because Burbach's is my favorite. I think they also use local honey, eggs from the goose mobile, and Burbach's milk for their baked items. I also like it that they take the local side of things. I mean, why not? I've never tried their baked goods :-/
